Speaking at the Automotive Sector Workshop on the Road to 5G, Dr. Ömer Fatih Sayan, Chairman of the Information Technologies and Communication Authority, said, “In line with the 2023 vision set forth by our esteemed President, we are not indifferent to this development and transformation. We, as representatives of a rooted civilization, should and will be the pioneers of this high value-added technological transformation.”
The "Automotive Sector Workshop on the Road to 5G," related to the automotive sector, which is one of the industries that will use 5G technology the most, was held under the roof of the BTK.
Dr. Ömer Fatih Sayan, Chairman of the Information Technologies and Communication Authority, attended the Automotive Sector Workshop on the Road to 5G, held as part of the 5GTR Forum activities. The workshop was attended by many representatives from the automotive sector, IT experts, as well as representatives from public institutions, universities, and relevant civil society organizations.
DRIVERLESS VEHICLE CONTROLLED VIA MOBILE PHONE DEMONSTRATED AT THE WORKSHOP
Within the scope of the workshop, where trends, studies, plans, and challenges related to the 5G automotive vision were discussed, an “Intelligent Vehicle Demo” was showcased. BTK Chairman Sayan received information about the features of smart vehicles. It was stated that smart vehicles equipped with next-generation technologies determine road conditions in advance and adjust speed accordingly, eliminate the risk of radar detection, and directly communicate with emergency services in case of an accident. Sayan also watched a demo of controlling these vehicles driverlessly via a mobile phone.
SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENTIATION WILL BE ACHIEVED WITH 5G
As the technologies developing and what 5G can bring to sectors take shape, Sayan stated that they aimed to bring together representatives of the two sectors, which will meet more frequently in the coming years, by creating an occasion: “Last year, we established the 5GTR Forum to prepare Turkey for 5G and beyond. The 5GTR Forum, which stands for 'New Generation Mobile Communication Technologies Turkey Forum,' was established last year to ensure collaboration among public institutions, universities, manufacturers, operators, and relevant civil society organizations in our country, and to coordinate all efforts. Electronic communication technologies today bring along many different elements that will increase competition and cause a paradigm shift from the perspective of vertical sectors. Therefore, 5G needs to be evaluated differently from previous generations. Because 5G not only accelerates and diversifies communication between people from the perspective of the electronic communications sector but also means a significant differentiation from previous generations in terms of connecting objects to each other.”
5G WILL BE THE BEGINNING OF AN IMPORTANT TRANSFORMATION
Stating that the change with 5G will be the beginning of an important transformation like the start of agriculture or the use of steam engines in industry in human history, Sayan said, “The sectors where this change will be felt the most are automotive and intelligent transportation systems. Semi-autonomous technologies that facilitate driving have started to be offered in vehicles on the market today. However, we are not far from fully autonomous cars either. There are many companies working on autonomous vehicles right now, and we see that the dates given for the first autonomous vehicles are around 2020.” He added: “2020 is also the year targeted for the completion of 5G standardization efforts and the launch of the first commercial 5G services... Of course, it is no coincidence that both sectors target the 2020s. Because information and communication technologies will be at the center of the change that will occur. It is not possible to provide the capacity, speed, and latency durations required by the automotive sector and, more broadly, intelligent transportation systems with current systems. For this, it is essential to transition to 5G and prepare new infrastructures in parallel with developments in vertical sectors.”
WE, AS REPRESENTATIVES OF A ROOTED CIVILIZATION, SHOULD BE THE PIONEERS OF TECHNOLOGICAL TRANSFORMATION!
Sayan, who said that in line with the 2023 vision set by our esteemed President, they are not indifferent to this development and transformation, and that they continue their devoted efforts with enthusiasm and zeal to transition to the world's most advanced technology at the point they have reached, said, “We, as representatives of a rooted civilization, should and will be the pioneers of this high value-added technological transformation. As members of a mentality that draws strength from its tradition and history, and that has opened and closed eras, I want to say that we have all the means to be the pioneers of this change. With Release 14, on which 3GPP, one of the main standardization bodies for 5G, is currently working, standards for V2X, that is, Vehicle-to-Everything, briefly 'vehicle-to-everything communication,' along with other topics, will begin to be established. In intelligent transportation systems, the ultimate goal, standardization and interoperability of systems for connected vehicles, urban infrastructure, transportation infrastructure, roads, bridges, traffic lights will be of vital importance.”
THE DAYS WHEN WE PUT OUR CHILD IN THE CAR AND SEND THEM TO SCHOOL WILL COME
BTK Chairman Sayan stated that intelligent transportation technologies, contrary to first impressions, stem not only from comfort demands but also from security needs: “Intelligent transportation technologies, especially autonomous vehicles, will minimize error margins, save lives, and prevent unnecessary resource consumption. Will the days come when we read the news in the car on the way to work or put our child in the car and send them to school? It seems that technically enabling such possibilities and integrating them into daily life is not difficult.”
NOTHING UNIMAGINED BECOMES REALITY
Sayan, quoting “Nothing unimagined becomes reality,” said that every innovation that has happened and come before us today must have been imagined somewhere: “The main essence of the human brain is what is called 'imagination' in philosophy. That is, we first imagine what will be done in our brain and construct it in our mind. Then we realize it physically with the necessary arguments. Examining what will be done with 5G sector by sector, fully planning its multiplier effect in social life, economy, and production will bring us to the threshold of a new era. I know and hope that we will seize this opportunity to catch the Industry and Technology train we missed 200 years ago. I believe that the world we imagine will definitely come true.”
AS TURKEY, WE SHOULD BE PRODUCERS AND LEADERS
Sayan reminded once again that 5G will cause revolutionary changes in vertical sectors and answered the question “As Turkey, which part of this change will we be in?”: “As Turkey, we want to move from the position of buyers and consumers in next-generation technologies to the position of producers and leaders. We invite our automotive sector to act with this vision. We invite all automotive companies operating in our country, especially those producing in Turkey, to do more than just implementing instructions from headquarters in sales offices or factories. As BTK, we are ready to do our part.”
EVERYONE SHOULD PUT THEIR HAND UNDER THE LOAD WITH THE SAME ENTHUSIASM
